Stay safe from username-based scams
Designer Wardrobe will never contact you with questions about your listings, and buyers or sellers should never email you directly. Your email address is never shared - all communication should take place securely via DW Chat.
Stay safe from username-based scams
If your Designer Wardrobe username is similar to the first part of your email address, scammers may try to contact you outside of the platform by guessing the rest of your address (e.g. username@gmail.com, username@hotmail.com, etc).
How this scam can work
- A scammer sees the buyer’s username and tries to guess their email address using common domains (e.g. yourname@gmail.com).
- The scammer then contacts the seller directly, pretending to be an interested buyer, and claiming they saw the seller's email during checkout.
- They offer to complete the sale privately — often at the same price — and ask for payment details outside of Designer Wardrobe.
How to protect yourself
- Do not use the same name or handle for both your email and your Designer Wardrobe username.
- If your email and username are similar, consider changing one of them to make it harder for scammers to guess.
- Never agree to take a transaction outside of Designer Wardrobe, regardless of the offer or explanation.
- We will never share your email address with other members. If someone claims to have seen it, it is a scam.
- If you’re ever unsure, stop and report the message to our team.
If you’ve already responded or sent payment outside the platform, please stop and contact us immediately.
